I'm a Canadian journalist living and working in the heart of the old world in Europe's east and Asia's west.

The political, economic and human situation in the region is in a flux and the future uncertain. Terrorism has a firm foothold here as does religious fervour and deep suspicion of the West.

The human story however doesn't change wherever you are in the world. Each person has the same basic needs - food, clothing and shelter.

Unfortunately, not everyone has access to those basic needs. And that's how it all begins.
